Fred Spike Bio
Fred graduated from the University of Michigan with a BS in Chemistry and post-graduate studies in polymer chemistry. He then became a Technical Sales Specialist with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co., training and assisting customers in the use of rubber for the manufacture of industrial products. Fred went on to be a Technical Applications Specialist for a company that produced state-of-the-art research instrumentation for top government, industry and university laboratories.
In 1977, Fred Joined American Hospital Supply Inc., helping it grow its industrial scientific supply market. Cleanroom products used in pharmaceutical, electronics and optical-glass fiber manufacturing became one of Fred’s specialties. Sales of laboratory supplies helped educate Fred about the operations and technical needs of a broad spectrum of customers.
By the early 1980s, it was clear that even large, sophisticated laboratory supply companies were not adept at serving all the needs of researchers involved in the most challenging frontiers of science.
Fred founded and directed Sun Brokers, Inc., a scientific supply company which filled many of the voids in the product lines of the larger companies. Sun Brokers, Inc., designed, developed and supplied products at the specific request of some of the world’s top scientists. In the process, Sun Brokers, Inc., became expert in the properties of specialty materials, including fluoropolymers, quartz, glass and chemical-resistant polymers.
By the late 1980s, Fred formed Sun Trading Vertriebs, GmbH, in Germany, to improve the ease of trading with Europe.
Fred was also dedicated to helping the community of Wilmington, NC., by serving as:
- Wilmington Chamber of Commerce – Campaign Volunteer
- Cape Fear Area United Way – Cabinet Member
- Cameron Art Museum – Board Member
- North Carolina World Trade Association – Member
